Witness Grand Sumo in Fukuoka
Fukuoka hosts Japan’s official Grand Sumo Tournament every November at Fukuoka Kokusai Center. During this approximately 4-hour guided experience, an English-speaking sumo expert introduces the traditions, culture, and rituals behind Japan’s national sport.
With roots stretching back centuries, sumo is more than a sporting competition. Wrestlers, known as rikishi, follow traditions shaped by disciplined training and life in sumo stables called heya.
As the official basho (tournament) unfolds, your guide explains the matches and rituals, including the use of salt for purification. The experience includes reserved chair seating on the third floor of Fukuoka Kokusai Center. Seating may be allocated from the S-, A-, B- or C-class chair sections depending on ticket availability. These sections primarily differ by position and viewing direction around the ring, rather than representing separate tour options.

Availability & Location
This approximately 4-hour experience runs from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM on selected November tournament dates at Fukuoka Kokusai Center. Meeting point instructions will be provided after booking.
Group Size
The Join-in experience requires at least 15 confirmed guests and accommodates up to 20 guests. Private tours are arranged separately for your group.
Age Requirement
Children must be accompanied by an adult aged 18 or older. Children aged 0–3 may attend without a separate arena ticket if seated on an adult’s lap. Guests aged 4 and above require their own reserved seat and a paid booking.
Wheelchair Accessibility
Please contact us before booking if you require wheelchair-accessible seating, stroller storage, or other mobility accommodations. Standard tour tickets are for reserved third-floor chair seats; wheelchair seating requires a separate availability check and arrangement.
Food at the Arena
Meals and drinks are not included in the tour. Food may be available for purchase at the arena. Please follow the venue’s current rules for outside food and beverages.
Crowds at the Arena
Fukuoka Kokusai Center can be crowded during tournament days. You may need to wait for a break between matches before entering or returning to the seating area. Please follow your guide’s instructions.

Minimum Participation
The Join-in experience requires at least 15 confirmed guests to operate. If the minimum is not met, we will cancel the Join-in tour and provide a full refund. The Private experience is not subject to this group minimum.
Tournament Tickets
Tournament tickets are arranged in advance, and final seating details may be confirmed closer to the tournament date. Reserved third-floor chair seats will be allocated from the S-, A-, B- or C-class sections, subject to ticket availability.
In the unlikely event that we cannot secure the required tickets, our team will contact you with alternative options or provide a full refund.

When do the sumo tournaments take place in Japan?
The official basho (tournaments) take place six times a year at various locations, with each tournament lasting 15 days. The start and end dates both land on Sundays.

What if I’m late?
Please arrive at the meeting point at least 10 minutes before the designated meet-up time.
Join-in experiences: The group departs at the scheduled meeting time. The guide cannot wait for late arrivals. Guests who miss the departure may not be able to join, and no refund is provided for missed participation due to late arrival.
Private experiences: The guide may wait for up to 15 minutes after the designated meet-up time. After that, the experience may proceed without late guests, and no refund is provided for missed participation due to late arrival.
